Education and Democracy in an Age of
Post-truth

Chair(s): Tomo Muramatsu (Rikkyo
University)

Discussant(s): Shigeo Kodama (The
University of Tokyo)

This symposium is planned as an official
project by the Japan Educational Research Association (JERA).

Democracy now brings about unpredictable
consequences, such as the UK 's decision to withdraw from the EU and the
election of President Trump in the United States.
 Especially
since the emergence of the Trump administration in the US, a kind of feeling of
cynicism that distrust the knowledge based on truth has been prevailing, and
the term of post-truth has come to be made.

Post-truth is a contemporary version of
anti-intellectualism that has covered the intellectual world since the end of
the Cold War, Given the trap of an assumption that there is an objective fact
somewhere and that there is correct democratic politics, what is important is
not to oppose simple positivism against anti-intellectualism, but to face the
anti-intellectualism deeply rooted in civil world seriously, and to find out
the possibility of coming democracy laying in the world.

From this perspective, in this symposium
we will discuss the possibility of coming democracy and education in the age of
post-truth.

At this symposium it is planned that
four panelists will be on stage. Gert Biesta at Maynooth University, Harry
Boyte at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, Hiroko Hirose at Senshu University
in Tokyo, and Takako Imai at Seikei University in Tokyo. And this symposium is
chaired by Shigeo Kodama at the University of Tokyo.
